Research Abstract |
We published "Tombs during the Middle Ages in Hokkaido, Japan" and "Tombs during the Middle Ages in Japan, appendix" as last series of whole collection. Also we held a regional seminar in Hokkaido. We discussed the aspect not only in Hokkaido but also in Tohoku region and eastern Russia. Then in fall we held a general conference where the result in each region was presented. Following subjects were focused; existence and development of tombs during the Middle Ages related with acceptance of cremation, distribution of Yashiki-baka, the end of tombs in the Middle Ages and how tombstones should be. Concerning the existence of tombs during the Middle Ages, grouped ones was discussed. It is related with acceptance of cremation and that has something in common in every region. At the same time the defference between eastern Japan and western Japan was revealed. Especially the difference of acceptance period of cremation is to be discussed in aspect of chronology of earthen ware and potteries and also that of archaeology. Surrounded areas also must be discussed. About Yashiki-baka it was accepted differently between eastern Japan and western Japan. Especially in Tohoku region it started with delay. Ending period of tombs during the Middle Ages was almost at about the 16th century in every region though there is no useful chronological measurement based on small tomb stones and itabi (board shaped tomb stone), which show the delay of the study in this field. It seems important for us to realize the situation of tombs in the late Middle Ages because it enables to understand the society itself. Further research on relationship between tombs and tomb stones is required. Because digital material collected for this project is abundant, then in view of future appendix and correction, it is necessary to set up a database to share them each other besides the publication.
