Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In Utsunomiya City, the first case study location, we participated in satoyama conservation and urban agriculture activities and conducted participatory observations.
In November, just before the end of the research period, we conducted additional field research in Kumamoto, the third case study location, as the coronavirus-related restrictions were relaxed.
In parallel, based on the research activities during FY 2019 and FY 2020, we undertook background research on the Japanese context of urban nature-based innovations, governance structures and enabling/limiting conditions. We also undertook literature analysis and field research (interviews, site visits, workshops, mobile labs), and analysis of NBS (a) governance dynamics and (b) enabling or limiting factors of the three case studies, from which comparative analysis was developed.
Two academic articles co-authored with Japanese partners in the broader research field of sustainable urban development were written. Presentations and discussions were held at two multi-stakeholder workshops with the aim of enhancing understanding of governance dynamics and mutual learning in the area of nature-based innovations in October and November respectively.
In parallel, we have also been discussing joint international research collaborations and developing joint future research applications on climate governance and nature-based solutions - based on our previous and recent research in relation to these topics. To enhance interdisciplinarity, we did so with the involvement of researchers from different Japanese universities.
