Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We obtained all the data planned for this project and started analyzing them. Dr. Hellemans created a pipeline to obtain about 400 genes from the Wolbachia genomes found in our shotgun sequencing data. These genes will be used to build a phylogenetic tree of Wolbachia. He also created several additional pipelines to obtain termite’s ultra-conserved elements, mitochondrial genomes, and rDNA genes. Finally, he is currently writing two papers that resulted from side projects: one on the evolution of termite diet, and one on the evolution of mutualistic Wolbachia found in the termite Cavitermes tuberosus.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The work is progressing well and Dr. Hellemans is on track. He is working on several papers and created the pipelines that will be used in the proposed project. In conclusion, Dr. Hellemans is performing well and will achieve the goal of the research proposal.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Dr. Hellemans will continue the analyses of Wolbachia genomes. I expect the bioinformatics analyses to be done this year, and I expect the papers to be submitted for publication in 2022.
