Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research focuses on the Japan Teachers' Union (JTU) from its formation in 1947 to its reconciliation with the Ministry of Education in 1995. The question of how political and economic fluctuations affected the conflict of debate over movement policies within JTU, and how they transformed JTU, is considered.
The goals and tactics of JTU's movement policy were almost identical with the lines considered by mainstream executives of the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan (Sohyo). Within JTU, the composition of the conflict over the movement policy was a direct reflection of the composition of the conflict between the trends in the labor movement at the time. Thus, the process of prosperity of the movement promoted by Sohyo the process of strengthening JTU's fighting power were congruent, and when the movement by Sohyo reached a dead end, the JTU movement also came to a dead end.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

文部省対日教組、保守対革新という単純な軸で論じられることが多かった戦後日本の教育政治をめぐる対立の構造を、本研究の知見は大きく修正するものを含んでいる。また、戦後日本の教職員の教育労働運動に関する歪んだイメージの一部を修正し、また、戦後教育史の中のいくつかの重要な出来事についての通説の見直しを提示できた。本研究の成果は、戦後教育史像や戦後教育学のとらえ方に再考を迫るものであると同時に、政治史や労働運動史、思想史などの研究に対しても示唆を与える内容を含んでいる。社会的意義としても、戦後史の捉え方や評価をめぐる今後の議論に有益な知見を提供する点で大きな貢献をなすことになる。
