骨機能劣化を生じないインプラントの創製を目的とし、骨の強度を支配するアパタイトとコラーゲン組織の配向性形成に必要な応力閾値や生体中での骨に加わる応力検知と配向組織形成機構を探り、新たなインプラントを設計・製作して埋入試験を行うとともに、骨細胞関連因子と配向性形成の生態メカニズムを解明する。
従来の骨密度に基づく医療から脱却し、骨強度を骨アパタイトの配向性で評価するという点に独自性と創造性があり、特に実用的な点から波及効果の大きい研究である。材料工学と生物科学が効果的に連携した点で興味深く、従来の概念を覆す成果が得られるものと期待できる。
