植物や微生物において鉄イオンの取り込みに働くシデロフォアの新規機能についての研究である。本課題のシデロフォアは糸状菌Acremonium persicinum由来のものであり、全く新しい作用機作を持つ強力な抗真菌物質としての機能解明をめざす。他の微生物との相互作用における役割の解明や海洋細菌からの新規シデロフォアの探索も行う。
シデロフォアの新規機能を明らかにするという研究課題の核心をなす学術的「問い」は明確であり、学術的独自性や創造性が認められる。本研究の成果は単なる基礎研究だけでなく、より広い学術、科学技術あるいは社会などへの波及効果が期待できる。鉄欠乏環境に生息する海洋細菌からのシデロフォア探索には発展性が期待できる。
