本研究はフェロモンの活用という新たな発想から繁殖障害の克服に取り組むための第一歩となる基盤的研究である。これまで研究代表者らがヤギやヒツジで明らかにしてきた「雄効果」というフェロモンによる強力な性腺刺激現象の存在をウシでも明らかにし，最終的には人工フェロモンの合成を目指す研究である。
乳牛の繁殖障害を克服するための新たなステップとして社会的な波及効果は高い。牛において「雄効果」による同様の機作が明らかにできれば、普遍的な性行動の仕組みの解明に近づくと同時に、発情異常への対処による繁殖成績向上にもつながる。すなわち、学術、応用の両面で大きな波及があり、国内外の研究領域をリードすることが期待できる。
