Outline of Annual Research Achievements

コンピュータと融合したホログラフィは究極の3次元映像計測技術として期待されている.しかし,ホログラフィ技術が発明されてから70年を経た現在においても実用化さていないグランドチャレンジなテーマとして残されている.課題はホログラフィ計算の高速化とホログラムを表示するディスプレイの高精細化・大型化である.本研究では,計算の高速化については内部の回路を書き換え可能なFPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array)を用いてホログラフィ計算専用チップを開発し,ホログラムの表示については世界最大規模の高精細液晶ディスプレイ(LCD)を活用する.
本年度は,コロナ禍の影響を受け,研究手法を実験ベースから計算機を用いたシミュレーションベースにシフトした.その結果,高速計算アルゴリズムの研究や高速な演算回路設計が進展した.描画ベースのホログラムに対して高速フーリエ変換を用いるよりも50倍程度高速なアルゴリズムや,ヒルベルト変換を用いて振幅ホログラムから位相ホログラムを生成するアルゴリズム,さらにはGPUベースの時分割処理による大規模ホログラムの再生手法などの提案を行った.また,ハードウェア設計に対しては.CPUとFPGAを内蔵したSoC(Silicon-on-a-Chip)であるザイリンクス社製Zinqチップを搭載したFPGAボードを用いて,チップベースのホログラフィ専用計算回路の可能性について研究を行った.これらの研究成果について,10編を超える論文として発表した.

Reason

コロナ感染症の影響で実験等は順調に行えなかったが,計算機による数値シミュレーションベースの研究体制に変更することで,高速アルゴリズムやFPGAベースの回路設計が大きく進展し,多くの研究成果を発表することができている.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

大規模FPGAボードを用いて,高速なホログラフィ専用計算システムの開発にチャレンジする.また,実験が自由に行えるようになれば,光学系の構築を再開し,ホログラフィックヘッドマウントディスプレイの開発を再開し,有効性を検証していく予定である.
