Outline of Final Research Achievements

By comparing the process of noun incorporation in the Northen Asia language, Chukchi and the use of lexical suffixes in the North American language, Salish, similaries in their functions were confirmed; however, a prominent difference was also found. For example, nouns denoting instrument or location can be expressed by incorporation in Chukchi, but in Salish, such notionss cannot be expressed with lexical suffixes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究で対象としたチュクチ語とセイリッシュ語族の言語は，いずれもいわゆる少数の話者によって話されている言語であるが，一語（特に述部）に多くの概念を盛り込みうるタイプの言語である。機能的には似ていると言われていた抱合と語彙的接尾辞という語形成手段を比較対照することによって，自然言語において，どのように語を作るか，そして，系統が異なる言語において，それがどのような類似を見せるか，相違があるかを精査していくことによって，人間の言語というものの理解に近づくことができたと考えられる。特にこれらの言語の研究者は世界的に非常に少ないこともあり，国際的な貢献度も高いと言える。
