Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study is the first global comparison of revolutions. Traditional comparative studies have focused primarily on the transatlantic region, with France and Russia as models for their interpretations. We have added Japan and Iran to the comparison and have drawn from the Japanese experience to explore the conditions for revolutions with less bloodshed. These conditions are a political culture of negotiated decisions and avoiding ideological conflict. On the other hand, there were important elements in the West that Japan did not have: parliaments, debate and media, and the idea of an alternative order. In revolutions, speech and violence generally rise synergistically. Making that separation is important but can take many years, sometimes close to 80 years.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

社会改革に暴力は必須だろうか。ボリシェヴィキ革命の成功以来、これを肯定する考えが世界に拡まった。しかし、明治維新は世襲身分制の廃止を僅かな犠牲（3.1万人）で成し遂げた。この史実は犠牲の少ない社会変革の可能性を示唆する。従来の革命比較はロシア革命、さらにフランス革命をモデルにしてきたため、暴力への態度は曖昧だった。この研究は、明治維新から出発して、他の革命で暴力がどう拡大し、どう終熄したかを分析し、今後の人類に暴力発動の過去を反省し、暴力なき社会改革を考える手掛りを供しようとする。
