Outline of Final Research Achievements	The foundations of Japan's laws for the protection of cultural heritage were laid in the early to mid-Meiji period, and nearly 150 years have passed since their enactment. However, their historical significance and the process of transition have not been academically examined. In particular, the Imperial Museum established in 1889 and the Law for the Preservation of Ancient Temples and Shrines enacted in 1889 have a close relationship, but this has not been thoroughly discussed. In this study, we organized documents from the Meiji period kept at the Nara National Museum and clarified the details of the transfer of cultural properties from shrines and temples. Using these and other historical documents such as old photographs, we aimed to clarify the legal system for the protection of cultural properties in the Meiji era and the aspects of the establishment of the Imperial Museum, especially the process of establishing the modern concept of cultural property protection.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements	幕末から明治にかけて、社会制度や宗教、人びとの生活や思考が大きく変転し、古器旧物や宝物などが一時期困難な時代をむかえた。この時期は、廃仏毀釈と海外への美術品流出、それらに対する反動と反省としての文化財保護という文脈で語れることが少なくなかった。本研究は、当時の歴史と新たに誕生した文化財保護法制、そのなかで中心的な役割を果たした帝国博物館の関係を、未公開史料にもとづいて実証的に検証するこれまでにない試みだった。成果は多岐にわたるが、近世から近現代にいたる歴史的諸要素を整理し、展覧会開催や論文執筆、新たな史資料と美術品の発見ならびに博物館での展示公開、という社会への還元をいち早くおこなった。
