Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to determine the extent of the effect of market integration due to the construction of railroads in the Meiji period and what path dependency existed in this effect.Approximately 4,000 man-hours were spent digitizing the Imperial Statistical Yearbook, prefectural statistical books, and other statistical documents. Preliminary analysis confirmed that market integration was not simply a matter of a single commodity price and factor price equalisation, but that rice production increased as a result of inter-regional competition. It was also confirmed that in regions where rice production did not increase, there was a (relative) decline in agricultural wages. Historically, these were the regions where industrialisation occurred earlier.

本研究は、経済活動における移動コストの減少がどのような経済効果をもたらすのかという観点で社会的意義がある。例えば、サブサハラ・アフリカでの交通インフラの整備、東アジア・東南アジアへの高速鉄道技術の提供、などに示唆を与えるだろう。 学術的な意義としては、処置効果の不均一性があるときの連続処置モデルの問題に対する示唆を持ちうる。集積や市場統合について考える際には、推定上の大きな課題がある。これらの問題を厳密な意味で解決することができれば、連続処置効果モデルの因果識別問題に貢献することになる。
