Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
For this fiscal year, this research project has accomplished the following three areas of achievements: (1) data collection from main stakeholders (e.g., older workers, policymakers, and community organizations), including both survey/quantitative data and interview/qualitative data; (2) conference presentations of research papers based primarily on literature reviews and secondary analysis of publicly-available administrative/government data; and (3) a continuous team-review of the relevant literature. As for (1), international research collaborators for this projects contributed to gathering data in three of the six countries that are included in this projects, whereas the principal investigator took the lead for gathering data in Japan. Regarding (2), paper presentations have been done at the Gerontological Society of America 2019 Annual Conference, The American Sociological Association 2019 Annual Meeting, the International Association for Gerontology and Geriatrics 2019 Asia-Oceania Regional Congress, and the 2019 International Conference on Social Science and Humanity. Additionally, discussions with two international academic publishers have been on the way with respect to two possible academic volumes based on the prospective findings from this research project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
It’s reasonable to assess that, for this fiscal year, the overall achievements of this research project summarized above has satisfied at least the minimum level of expectation set by the vision and plan of this entire research project. This research project originally planned to complete by the end of this fiscal year all the interview data collection process (via stakeholder interviews, and a series of focus group interview with individual older workers aged 65+) in all the six countries, then it aimed to move on to conducting a series of questionnaire-based survey (both online and onsite) in all those countries this coming fiscal year. This year, the data collection was conducted only in three countries (four, including Japan). In these countries, however, both interview and survey research have been conducted, which has successfully generated data that we believe would be sufficient in amount and decent in quality for eventual analyses. Paper presentations have been conducted at four separate academic conferences just as originally scheduled (three overseas and one domestic). Together, arguably, this entire research project has proceeded at a comfortable and manageable pace with reasonable outcomes against the overall schedule.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This coming fiscal year, this research project aims to engage in the following five activities: (1) start gathering both quantitative and qualitative data (via survey and interviews) from the countries/national contexts in which this research project didn’t cover in the previous year; (2) develop three journal article manuscripts to the level at which to be ready to turn into three different internal peer-reviewed journals, including Ageing International and the Journal of Aging and Social Policy; (3) complete a book manuscript, which has been under contract with Bristol University Press; (4) start developing a book manuscript that will be submitted to Routledge Publisher; and (5) conduct paper presentations at least at three academic conferences including at the Gerontological Society of America 2020 Annual Conference and The American Sociological Association 2020 Annual Meeting. All these activities will be continually pursued together with the international research collaborators for this research project.
