Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Over the past fiscal year (2020-21), this international research project had experienced immense challenges due to the persistent global public health crisis of the COVID-19, which forced the entire project to significantly amend its activity schedule for the remaining years. Nonetheless, this project also managed to have produced various achievements, which can be categorized in the following three areas (the outcomes in (1) and (2) were achieved in both onsite and online manners):
(1) The project has continued gathering both quantitative and qualitative data for a series of cross-national comparative analyses that are sufficient enough to be carried out this fiscal year (2021-22) largely as scheduled in the original application for this project; (2) Based on the data obtained in the previous years, the project members have run paper presentations at a total of six academic conferences. The project has also arranged and held a total of three international symposiums to disseminate part of its research findings to date. (3) This project has produced three pieces of articles that were accepted to and published in peer-reviewed academic journals. It has also completed a final draft of a book proposal that will be submitted to Bristol University Press (UK).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
It’s fair to assess that this international research project has made reasonable progress since the first year to date. The unprecedented public health crisis (COVID-19) has certainly disabled this project to carry out data collection activities exactly the way these were originally scheduled including both the locations and the timing. Also, at least three research presentations were planned to be conducted at the world’s top-class conferences and congresses in the fields directly relevant to the scope of this research project (gerontology).
Nonetheless, taking advantage of the arrival of the ‘time of online meetings,’ this project has carried out activities to collect original data that can be considered sufficient, both in quantity and quality, to maintain the basic framework and overall objectives of the project. Interestingly, this research project has also ended up running more conference presentations than originally scheduled as all the host academic conferences went online. Furthermore, while the book-writing project was originally scheduled to be started this fiscal year (2021-22), the project members, including the PI, have already produced a final version of the academic book proposal, which will be submitted to either Bristol University Press (UK) or Routledge Publisher (US) at some point early this year.
Together, this research project has found these achievements sufficient enough to argue that it has made reasonable progress to date.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This fiscal year (2021-22), this international research project aims to conduct the following three sets of activities:
(1) Continue gathering data for a series of cross-national comparative analyses. Both the survey and interview data (quantitative and qualitative, respective) will be collected in all the countries under study. When possible and appropriate, some data collection methods may be carried out on-site - in a face-to-face manner with the research subjects; (2) Continue presenting tentative research findings at international academic conferences including those that this research project is scheduled to organize (currently, the project plans to organize three online symposiums open to an international audience) ; and (3) Continue disseminating the research findings through developing and publishing articles in top-rated academic journals. The project, under the leadership of the PI, will also continue negotiating with the book publishers toward completing the book proposal and start writing the first three chapters of the academic monograph.
