Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. Metamaterial-based acoustic microscopy: With our scanning extraordinary-transmission-based acoustic microscope for deep subwavelength imaging, we have developed an analytical theory of the system based on the sonic Drexhage effect and a journal paper is in preparation. 2. Metasurface for air-water acoustic transmission: We have experimented on a new floating metasurface system of masses and springs of area 50 cm x 50 cm in a swimming pool to achieve enhanced acoustic transmission from water to air, with an enhancement achieved equal to ~150 in intensity. This structure is close to practical application for a diver warning system. A journal paper is in preparation. 3. Metapillars and metaplates for broadband multimode vibration isolation: A tapered metarod for broadband operation was tested and simulated, based on our previous straight metarod design, and sound blocking in the range 0.5-1 kHz demonstrated for all modes. A paper is being prepared for publication in Applied Physics Letters. 4. Flexural metaplates: We are continued to write up our results as a journal paper. 5. Phoxonic metamaterials for new physics and applications: We have demonstrated a triple negative phoxonic metamaterial based on a microwave double-negative metamaterial combined with a kHz acoustic negative-density metamaterial. A conference paper has been submitted on this subject. We hope also to finish simulations and submit a journal paper in the near future.
