Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The objective of this project is to synthesize a coaxial structure material of combining single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) for improving the performance of carbon nanotubes field-effect transistors. In the past year, we have obtained a significant amount of new results relating to controlling the synthesis process of SWCNTs wrapped with BNNTs, TEM characterizations of the micro structure of the nanotubes, and thermal stability test of the new material. These results are the fundamental part for building a high efficiency field-effect transistor. Besides, some of the results have been included in our recent published paper on Science. This project also brought several collaboration work with groups in different universities in Europe and the USA.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The project is going well as planned. The original plan was using the first year to get a better understanding of the growth mechnism and properties of the one-dimensional hetero nanotubes of SWCNTs and BNNTs. So far, we are capable of using transmission electron microscopy to exam the quality of the boron nitride coating on carbon nanotubes and to investigate the growth mechanism. Moreover, by adjusting the CVD time of boron nitride, the number of layer boron nitride on carbon nanotubes is controllable. Besides, we also confirmed after coating the boron nitride layers on carbon nanotubes, the thermal stability of the hetero nanotubes is much better than the original carbon nanotubes. The experimental results we have obtained show the progress of the project is very well.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the next year, firstly, we are going to improve the quality of the hetero nanotubes of single walled carbon nanotubes coated by boron nitride nanotubes in terms of the uniformity, the morphology of the nanotubes, and the electrical properties. Secondly, we will try to synthesize different one dimensional hetero nanotubes combining boron nitride nanotubes and molybdenum disulfide nanotubes. For the new hetero nanotubes, we will use various charaterization methods including TEM, SEM, Raman spectroscopy, and PL to study the structure and properties. Finally, we want to test the efficienct of field-effect transistors using hetero nanotubes in order to find more effective materials for the future transistor.
