Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
By applying the new acid salt of hexacyanidocobaltate(III), liquid organic ligand of hexamethylphosphoramide, and Yb(III) ion, I successfully synthesized an ionic supramolecular network, which is composed of a negatively charged cyanido-bridged trinuclear molecule of {Co-Yb-Co}, and dihydronium ion. This compound is the first example that integrates trifunctionalities of Yb(III)-centered single molecule magnetism, Yb(III)-centered near IR luminescence with ratiometric thermometry, and superionic proton-conductivity. This work is published in the JACS. In parallel, a cyanido-bridged dinuclear molecule containing Ho(III) ion was prepared. It shows rare single-Ho(III)-centered SMM property and luminescent thermometry based on the re-absorption effect of Ho(III). This work is finishing.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Following the newly developed synthetic method, I successfully prepared compounds showing dual functionalities of single molecule magnetism and photoluminescence. Moreover, the Yb(III)-containing cyanido-bridged coordination compound expands the multifunctionalities to the electrical aspect by introducing proton-conductivity. Such combination of SMM, luminescence, and proton-conductivity is unprecedented, and it provides novel approach to deal with the demand of multi-tasking material. This work was published in the high-impact journal of J. Am. Chem. Soc., and the appealing points have been well recognized by scientists in a variety of academic conferences. Therefore, I believe the progress of my research for this year is not only following the plan, but also more than the expectations.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the next year, I plan to keep investigating analogous compounds that were prepared by the similar synthetic strategy but with different organic ligands. The additional focus will be onto the humidity control on the functionalities. In addition, I will utilize auto-clave reactors to expand not only the reaction conditions but also the compound matrices.
