Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, each researcher presented their individual research: in 2021 at a public online workshop, in 2022 at an in-person workshop, and in 2023 at an international workshop in Singapore. Through these presentations, they deepened their mutual research. The outcomes can be broadly categorized into three major areas: issues surrounding the nature of consciousness, issues surrounding the moral status and consciousness, and issues surrounding brain organoids as a specific example. Each area was examined based on recent concrete cases such as human genome editing and brain organoids, leading to significant findings.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ある存在の意識レベルや意識の複雑さが、その存在の道徳的地位に影響を与えるという議論は古くからあり、それ自体目新しいものではないが、それが具体的にどの程度影響を与えるものなのかについては以前十分に研究されていない。また、そうした議論が動物の倫理の文脈で注目を浴びるなかで、新しい科学技術、脳オルガノイドの登場によって、議論の射程が広がりつつある。今回の研究成果は、そうした議論を整理し、論点がなんであるのかを明らかにすることに貢献したといえる。
