Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I researched Kant's idea of an idea and how that was influenced by Rousseau. The First Critique is the “idea of a science.” The “entire plan” of the “idea of a science” is outlined by the “critique of pure reason” (B 27). “Critique of pure reason” indicates something between the book and the idea. I also studied the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals. Its three main sections are each concerned with a transition [uebergehen]. Transition implies the movement from one state to another, the crossing of a boundary.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
My own research progressed smoothly. I completed a monograph on Kant's Critique of Pure reason that is now being translated into Japanese. I was able to give an invited lecture to Boston College's Political Science Department in November. I gave a paper to the other Kakenhi project on Kant and Hume and Christianity. I am now rewriting my manuscript on the First Critique.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I plan to write a proof that the Transcendental Object in the Kant's Critique of Pure Reason is both necessary to his system and yet, as he writes, problematic. At the same time this necessary but problematic concept is deeply involved in our unity of consciousness. By pursuing this line of research I hope to open a new perspective on Kant's critical project, that he is trying to reveal the victim at the basis of our knowing.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to Covid pandemic I was unable to travel to any international conference during AY 2020. I hope to use the money this year to travel.
