Outline of Final Research Achievements

Through this study, it became evident that the positioning of "music" in Merleau-Ponty's aesthetics has rather significant implications. Specifically, within the descriptions relating to the "little phrase" in Proust's "A la Recherche du temps perdu", Merleau-Ponty describes the relationship between music and its performers based on the ideal nature of music. While not accepting those descriptions as they are,　Merleau-Ponty is greatly stimulated by them.
Furthermore, it was revealed that moments in which music can "figurer le tourbillon d'etre" are also moments in which parole acquire meaning as words. Ultimately, this study was able to shed light on what it fundamentally means for words to have meaning.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

言葉の機能は、一見すると、単なる情報伝達の道具と捉えられがちである。しかし、その点にのみ注目すると、小説や詩、さらに哲学などの、創造的な言語表現がなぜ可能であるのかがわからなくなってしまう。本研究は、言葉が意味を持つようになる場面が、音楽の場面と共通した所にあることを明らかにし、そのことによって、また音楽がどうして何か意味を表現しているように思われる次第も明らかにすることができた。
言葉は人を傷つけもし人を慰めたりもし、さらには新しい事柄を考えることも可能にする所以の一端を明らかにすることの意義は大きいと思われる。
