Outline of Final Research Achievements

'Gods' or ‘the divine’ in the cosmologies of the so-called Presocratic philosophers have often been interpreted as a substantially non-religious concept based on 'de-mythologization' and 'de-theologization'; according to this interpretation, the term ‘God’ is used as a mere metaphor without religious significance. However, such an interpretation can be deemed superficial and invalid. It is true that the Presocratics aimed at 'understanding nature' rather than 'reforming religion,' but they, with still maintaining a religious mentality, established their own concept of ‘God’ by surpassing traditional religions within their inquiry into nature; their concept of 'God' certainly possesses a complex reality that cannot be fully captured as a mere metaphor.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ソクラテス以前哲学者は，自然の説明において擬人主義的神々を排除して抽象的レベルへと上昇しながらも，人によって生きられるこの自然的世界を根底から支えている力に対して，矛盾も葛藤もなしに明らかに原初的な尊崇や畏怖，賞賛といった宗教感情を自覚的に保持し続けている。その限りで，彼らの自然学説や宇宙論における合理的原理である「老いることのない永遠の神」は，決して譬喩ではなく彼らの宗教的心性が反映された文字通りの神であり，彼らの非譬喩的な「神」と合理的自然学とは連続一体的なものとして調和をなしている。かくして彼らの「神」を非宗教的概念と捉える伝統的解釈に問題があることを示した点に成果の学術的意義がある。
