Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

国宝「普賢菩薩像」（東京国立博物館）に代表される平安時代後期の仏画には、本来世俗的な絵画（肖像画や絵巻物等）に用いられる技法を意識的に取り入れたものがある。そのような技法の採用がどのような意図、信仰的な背景を伴って行われたものであったのか、特に上記の普賢菩薩像の修理プロジェクトに関わることで得られた新たな情報を取り入れながら明らかにし、我が国における仏画制作の重要な側面を浮かび上がらせた。
