Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study focuses on the details painted on the lower edges of medieval Italian religious paintings and the frame decoration that formed the boundary area, and clarifies how they connected the works to the viewer. The artists paid attention to details such as the toes and shoes of the figures in the painting, the folds and edges of the robe, the base of the throne and the footstool, the offerings to the saints in the painsing (vases, candles, etc.), and the images of the donors. I analyzed them in terms of where they are positioned inside their compositions and in relation to the decorative parts of the frame, and how they relate to the context of the viewer and the installation inside the churches. Through this analysis, I examined how the painters tried to appeal to the viewer's visual and tactile senses, directing their attention to the interior of the painting and mediating them to the heavenly world.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
