Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The Boke of Gostely Grace, is a Middle English translation of the Liber specialis gratiae by the German visionary Mechthild of Hackeborn who was a Benedictine nun at the convent of Helfta (now in Germany). The Boke of Gostely Grace emerged following Archbishop Arundel’s Constitutiones of 1409, the legislation issued to counter the ideological political struggles that Lollardy had precipitated. The Boke reflects the politico-religious tension of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. This new edition and the Companion to ‘The Boke of Gostely Grace add momentum to the current interdisciplinary and theoretical debate surrounding Latin texts disseminated in the continent (including those of Birgitta of Sweden and Catherine of Siena) and their translations into the vernaculars, including a number of issues regarding women’s literary culture in England.
