I published a peer-reviewed article on Edgar Allan Poe’s notes in "Review of Asian and Pacific Studies" no 45 (2020); a peer-reviewed article on Akira Kurosawa’s “Kagemusha” and Shakespeare’s English History Plays in Volume 33 Issue 1 of “Critical Survey”; and an online article on 18th century footnotes for Eighteenth Century Paratext Research Network.
I gave a special talk on Byron and Mitford at Tubingen University, Germany and a paper on George Forster at “The Intermedial Eighteenth Century” Conference at Northumbria University, UK. I also gave a talk on footnotes at Nerdnight, Tokyo.
I completed a full draft of a chapter on Coleridge and began a draft of a chapter on Melville and an article on W. G. Sebald’s intermedial annotation, for a special journal issue I am planning to co-edit.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
My personal research is proceeding largely as planned. However I had planned to hold an international conference related to this project entitled Pacific Paratexts in November 2020. I had secured Professor Rod Edmond and Ann Johnston as plenaries, sent out an international call for papers and made a conference website. However, due to the coronoa virus situation I have decided to delay the conference to October or November 2021. This will mean I need to reserve funds originally allocated for this year to next year and apply for an extension.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I managed to give some international talks via zoom this year. I also focused on my developing my monograph project. However, due to the corona virus situation, I will not be able to organize the mooted conference in November this year, as I had hoped.
Due to the continuation of the corona virus situation, I will continue to focus on the monograph project. I plan to give papers in the “Around the Text” conference at University of Birmingham, UK, and at the “Romantic Generations” Conference in Melbourne. I also plan to complete the special journal issue, and submit an essay to the “Re-Indigenizing Romanticism” special issue of “Studies in Romanticism”. I plan to apply for a year extension of my Kakenhi so that the “Pacific Paratexts” conference can take place in either Spring or Autumn 2022.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The amount will be used for my developing monograph project and for preparations towards the mooted conference.
