Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research concentrated on the one hand on recapitulating the history of the concept of authority, ranging from the 16th century, the classics of the Enlightenment to H. Arendt, R. Sennett (who analyses an elementary need for authority). Hereby, special attention was paid to the assessment of paternalism which plays an important role in Ogai’s "As if“. On the other hand, as a phenomenon connected to authority and the ways it is executed, "ressentiment“ became the focus from which the novel "Cecile“ (1887) by Fontane was reexamined. The phenomenon drew more and more attention on itself from the 1880s (Nietzsche, Dostojewski, Scheler a. o.) onwards. In the novel, especially the main character shows signs of ressentiment founded in a floating intermediary position amidst ongoing social change.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The unexpected educational and administrational load continued in FY 2020, while during the corona crisis, the shift to online teaching required a lot of teaching materials to be developed anew.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As the research plan for FY 2020 was difficult to carry out, the plan for FY 2021 remains almost the same, as far as Ogai’s"Oshio Heihachiro“ and its relation to his translation (and explanations) of Goethe’s "Goetz von Berlichingen“ has yet to be assessed. What Ogai tries to make clear by chosing and describing this social upheaval still has still to be taken into consideration and its implications for his understanding of the right forms of authority have subsequently to be compared to Fontane’s novel "Vor dem Sturm“. If time allows, a comparison of Ogai’s "Maihime“ and Fontane’s "Effi Briest“ from the angle of authority and disengagement will be carried out which may exploit a new aspect essential for a fuller understanding of both works.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to the corona crisis, especially concerns about travelling abroad as well as domestic, a considerable amount of the grant could not yet be made use of. Above that, the delay due to the teaching and administration load made expence for personnel unnecessary.
