Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Our prior research was published in this academic year in the peer-reviewed international journal, Reading Matrix. We also presented the study at International Association of Applied Linguistics.
We also collected new data using the eye tracker to determine how learners read and use the dictionary, and to analyze the results. We analyzed the results and wrote the paper and submitted it to the International Journal of Lexicography, the top dictionary research journal (listed in Web of Science). It is being reviewed. We also applied to present the results in three conferences. So far, the results show that many Japanese university students lack competence in dealing with vocabulary. Clear implications for education are found.
We also prepared to conduct new research, as described later.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is going very well since all our projects have been published, including in the most prestigious journals. We have also been able to present at conferences online, and we have received excellent feedback.
Dissemnating the results via face-to-face conferences has been slowed due to the coronavirus. Several conferences were delayed and put online. For this reason, we needed to extend another year .

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We have set up another research project. This involved researching the field, devising new methods, creating materials, and preparing the experiment. We are ready to conduct new data at the beginning of the school year. We will collect data in April of 2022. It will then take several months to analyze the data and write up the results. We again plan to publish the results in a top journal, listed in the Web of Science.
We plan to present the results at several international and national conferences. The conferences include European Conference of Eye Movements, which is the largest eye tracking conference.
Towards the end of the year, we plan to formulate a new study based on our previous work. Provided we can get another grant to pay for the eye tracking license, we will collect new data next year.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Conferences were cancelled or put online due to the coronavirus, so the funds we planned to use to travel to research conferences could not be used. Therefore, we plan to use the funds in 2022 to attend the conferences that were cancelled or put online. We will present our results of our research and learn the latest in other relevant research. We will also use the funds to pay for the license of the eye tracker.
