Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Planned research activities for year 2 (2020.4~2021.3) of the project included: (1) continue collecting data; (2) transcribe recorded data; (3) analyse data; (4) present initial findings at conferences. Due to COVID-19, many planned activities were unable to be completed fully. Research achievements for the above period are as follows: (1) Data has been collected from 10 workplaces, but mostly interviews between 2019.11~ 2020.02 (pre-COVID-19). Gaining access to workplace discourse has not been possible due to COVID. (2) Data transcription is continuing. (3)~(4) While some initial analysis of the data has been carried out, a planned panel session at the EPICS IX conference (Spain) was cancelled due to COVID-19 and project members report being unable to attend conferences due to COVID-19.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The spread of COVID-19 has resulted in data not being able to be collected, the cancellation of a planned panel session, and project members being unable to attend conferences. It has also meant that much time was needed to be spent dealing with COVID-19 related issues, so available time for research was limited.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Due to the delays caused by COVID-19, I would like to apply for a year's extension to the project so that the goals of the project (understanding cross-cultural linguistic behaviour and communicative problems/solutions in multicultural workplaces; providing research results and feedback to participating workplaces) can be achieved. If an extension is received, the plans for the project will be as follows: 2021.4~2022.3 - Continue data collection/transcription and analysis of data; continue publishing/presenting results of the research at conferences; etc. 2022.4~2023.4 - Continue analysis of data/presentation of results of research at conferences; Feedback of results to participants; Development of resource to assist workplaces with cross-cultural communication issues
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to COVID-19, project members were unable to travel to conferences and data was unable to be collected as anticipated. As a result, some of the money allocated for 2020 was unable to be used. With an extension of 1 year, we hope to use the left-over money for conference travel and other expenses.
