Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This project explores how Japanese artists use English as a foreign language to transfer technical and procedural knowledge in higher education contexts of the ceramic arts. The research specifically aims to analyze the demonstrative artist-talk speech genre, in order to develop valid pedagogical approaches to prepare Japanese students, educators, and ceramic artists to participate in the international discourse community of ceramic arts education.

In the first year of the project, research efforts primarily focused on an analysis of artist talks by native-level English speakers, which will be used as a baseline for comparison.

The PI presented research findings and project objectives at three academic forums and submitted a peer-review article for publication in FY2020.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

For most of FY 2019, progress stayed on schedule, and the PI was able to get a head start with data collection initially planned for FY2020. However, due to the global pandemic of covid-19, a scheduled presentation at the international conference of the American Association of Applied Linguistic was canceled.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Due to the uncertainty of the global pandemic, some redesign of the original research plan will be necessary. The PI will explore alternative ways to collect data needed for the project's second phase of analysis of post-graduate students at Japanese universities and colleges of art. Moreover, pending on travel restrictions, international travel for conference presentation is tentatively planned, but alternatives for research dissemination will also be sought.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, the international AAAL conference was canceled. Some funds designated for travel were recouped. These funds will be used for future conference travel and/or for technical support to collect data via teleconferencing.
