Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Continued difficulty was encountered with data collection in ceramic studios during the pandemic. Accordingly, a wider register perspective of “how-to” texts in similar demonstrative contexts was adopted to identify linguistic patterns and functional characteristics found in procedural monologues by both L1 and L2 speakers. Two original corpora were compiled: a 45,000-word corpus of YouTube how-to videos by native speakers and a 10,000-word corpus of original data of 50 videos by Japanese undergraduates. Efforts continued to compile a corpus of artist talks, which will be used to build on the 2020 analysis of genre characteristics. A non-reviewed paper and a proceedings paper were published. Presentations were given at both the JALT and JACET international conferences.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

Due to issues related to the pandemic, a decision was made to extend the project for an additional year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This final year will be dedicated to applying results from the analysis of general how-to texts of native speakers to identify the key differences in linguistic characteristics and communicative functions in procedural monologues produced by Japanese learners of EFL. Subsequently, focus will shift to using the corpus of artist talks to determine specific lexis and any additional genre characteristics from the project's previous (2020) analysis. Final plans are to produce prototype learning materials to assist both artists and ESP teaching. Plans for dissemination include lectures at Japanese public and private centers of the ceramic arts and universities and colleges with ceramic programs.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the pandemic, domestic and international travel, for data collection and conference presentation, was limited.
