2020 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Measuring L2 Communication Anxiety and L2 Task Performance: A Physiological Approach

Research Project

Project/Area Number 19K00765
Research InstitutionFuture University-Hakodate

Principal Investigator

リヴァーズ ダミアン  公立はこだて未来大学, システム情報科学部, 教授 (00515455)

Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsL2 Communication / Physiological / Anxiety / Online Learning
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The previous year saw the purchase of the required hardware in the form of Empatica E4 devices. A programmer was sourced for the processing of physiological data and the base measure of anxiety was placed online. This year the project has been impacted by the novel coronavirus and prohibitions on face-to-face contact and regular interactions with students. It has been impossible to collect physiological data from student as previously planned due to regulations surrounding the pandemic. This year the focus therefore shifted to extending the ongoing literature review in preparation for the research articles to be drafted after the physiological data has been collected and analyzed. This year has also been spent exploring how communication anxiety can be assessed online in terms of specific point of anxiety arousal and the reliable measurement of such from students in distant locations. In adjusting to the changing circumstances surrounding university education, several research projects and publications concerning online education in the era of the novel coronavirus pandemic were undertaken and completed. The works focused on metacognitive knowledge, the academic self-concept and the use of virtual reality in research collaboration, personality and academic self-efficacy and the acceptance of the Moodle LMS, and goal orientations, learning strategies and achievement in an online foreign language learning course.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

This year the project has been impacted by the novel coronavirus and prohibitions on face-to-face contact and regular interactions with students. It has been impossible to collect physiological data from student as previously planned due to regulations surrounding the pandemic.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The final year of the project will be focused on collecting physiological data and overcoming the delay experienced in the previous year. The project will proceed in accordance with the original application. Once the data is collected and analyzed, several research articles will be drafted and submitted for publication. The project will then focus on the implications created for L2 communication anxiety research by the global shift toward online learning solutions and the prohibition of face-to-face anxiety arousing encounters.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic travel was not possible.
