Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aimed at developing an English CLIL program, utilizing different cognitive effects by employing various teaching materials. Paper textbooks, worksheets, e-textbooks, PC screens and smartphone applications were used as teaching materials for our investigation through questionnaires and Fujitsu EyeExpert, an eye tracking system. Because our target students, who are technical college students, are familiar with the tools and there is little cognitive difference among the materials, we’ve concluded that it’s more important to design lessons, making full use of the characteristics of the teaching materials: paper limits information whereas electronic devices help users to access information and expand their ideas easily. We’ve developed a CLIL program, using Smart Choice published by Oxford UP.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本調査により、媒体ごとに認知における特徴的な差異があり、ある特定の媒体が他の媒体より人間の認知機能に格別有効に作用する可能性は低く、学習者がそれまでに使用していた媒体によって学習実感が異なることが分かった。教材は学習者の足場架けであり、学習を促す道具である。コロナ禍によりICT機器の授業への導入が急速に加速する中、すべてを何か一つの媒体に頼るのではなく、情報を制限したり理解の助けになるなど、教材媒体が持つ特徴を生かし、授業内外で学習をリンクさせるプログラムを提案できたことは、今後の英語教育にとって重要なことであると考える。
