Outline of Final Research Achievements

As for Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) or English Medium Instruction (EMI), it is vital for teachers not only to give lectures in English but also to encourage and involve students to actively engage in discussion and to make effective presentations in English. In so doing, giving language support is also essential for students as listeners or presenters. The present study has revealed that important skills for such environments are (a) paraphrasing low-frequency words and idioms, (b) making impromptu presentations using visuals, and (c) recognizing habitual and semantic combinations of words known as collocations and reusing them.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中学から大学に至るまで、英語教員の英語熟達度が高い場合、どうしても自身が英語を駆使した授業を行いがちである。しかし、本研究では、そうした状況では必ずしも学習者の英語発信能力が高まるわけではなく、教授者が言語サポートのノウハウを知ったうえで授業を行う必要がある。本研究では、これをコロケーションの認識、英英辞典を適宜活用したパラフレーズの手法、ビジュアル情報をキーワードのみを使って(原稿なしで)発表を行う練習方法についてノウハウを提供し、それをマニュアル化(順次様々なサイトで公開)した点に特徴がある。
