Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research has progressed on target with the proposed timeline:.Between 4/ -8/2019, a curriculum analysis was conducted to ascertain three aims: (1) How meaningful interaction was being incorporated into current curricula in both undergraduate and graduate courses; (2) If TaLL would be an attractive addition to current self-directed learning practices; (3) Any challenges and benefits of implementing a TaLL scheme within the university. A paper was later published. A workshop was conducted at the end of 9/2019 during the summer vacation (https://www.i-arrc.k.kyoto-u.ac.jp/jo0ocsbk0-55/). Forty-six students signed up for the workshop. Results of the curriculum analysis were presented in Tokyo at the ACE2019 conference (10/31-11/04, 2019). A paper was later published in the conference proceedings. TaLL Cycle 1: Face-to-face and video-mediated interchange through Skype enabled students to share research ideas, network and develop possible foundations for future collaborative projects. Participants at the post-graduate levels met weekly in an Informal Learning Environment (n=26). A parallel classroom tandem program ran concurrently at Kyushu University (n=38). The presenters presented results of TaLL Cycle 1 in Neufchatel, Switzerland at the VALS-ASLA Conference (2/12-24). TaLL Cycle 2 (renamed iLearn: Informal Learning Environment for Academics and Researchers through Networking). (https://www.i-arrc.k.kyoto-u.ac.jp/jo3rx3ycs-55/). Unfortunately, due to the corona virus outbreak, all workshops and events planned for 3/2019 were cancelled.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
TaLL/iLearn: The students who signed up for the cancelled workshop in 3/2019 will be contacted. Work is currently being done to offer the workshop and group events online (https://mccarthytanyam.wixsite.com/ilearn). The timeline has been revised for FY2020 to offer iLearn group sharing in an online format. A face-to-face workshop or webinar has been proposed to continue Cycle 2 in 9/2020.
Dissemination of research results: The researchers have been invited to publish a paper in the VALS-ASLA conference journal which will be published later this year. The researchers have been accepted to present results of iLearn at the AILA Conference in Groningen, Netherlands in 8/2020. This may also be cancelled. It is possible that the researchers will be required to do a virtual presentation.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
TaLL/iLearn Program Due to the corona virus, student meetings at the university will be moved online. Meetings with Kyushu University are ongoing and a webinar and Skype exchange will be organized in place of face to face meetings and workshops.
Expenditure plans for FY2020-2021 Funds have been carried over by both researchers to pay for the 6-day conference in the Netherlands. iPads were not purchased in FY2019 as the cost of traveling to conferences was more than expected (due to visa applications and interviews at an embassy, as well as cost of flights to Europe). The aim is to purchase two ipads and accessories for skype exchanges in FY2020, as some students do not have smartphones. Funds will also be required to maintain the website for online services instead of printing materials.

Causes of Carryover |
Funds have been carried over by both researchers to pay for the conference in Europe in 8/2020. iPads were not purchased in FY2019 as the cost of traveling to conferences was more than expected (due to visa applications, and embassy trips, as well as cost of flights to Europe). The aim is to purchase an iPad and accessories for online exchanges in FY2020, as some students do not have smartphones. Funds will also be required to maintain the website for online services instead of that which was previously allocated for printing materials.
