Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To rectify this gap in empirically grounded materials and methods for the teaching of diplomatic writing,to continue data collection, analysis on Resolutions(tangible products of a United Nations committee’s deliberations through the result of research, writing, discussion, negotiation on 3-committees General Assembly, Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, Nishide & Hollenback attended the National Model United Nations New York Conference the first in-person conference for over 3000 participants since 2019 in April 2022 (http://www.nmun.org/). Data was also collected successfully held from the National Model United Nations Japan conference for Japanese and non-Japanese University students by Nishide/Hollenback/Tatsuki at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies for 4-days days with 400 participants in November 2022. In addition, data was collected the Japan University Model United Nations (JUEMUN) writing 12 United Nations for 200 students in June 2022 (juemun.org). We are now using a genre approach in our data analysis to illustrate the similarities and deficits in (recurrent grammar and phraseological patterns, and function and purpose of the content) student generated Model United Nations resolutions and creating materials to pilot in Model United Nations classes at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We are not on schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the National Model United Nations in New York with over 5000 participants where we were doing data collection was cancelled for many years. Due to the cancellation we were not able to get the resolution data on three United Nations bodies for in-person conferences. Therefore, in 2022, we kept collecting more data for analysis. We are recovering but have less data than initially planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The funding will be used to: 1) Continue to collect data at Model United Nations conferences in Asia, North America and Europe. The data will be collected at conferences and through interviews with diplomats and United Nations Secretariat members on diplomatic writing for 3 bodies including Security Council, Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly. 2) To present out findings at conferences in Asia (Japan, Cambodia), North America (US) and Europe (Italy, Germany).
|
Causes of Carryover |
Funds will be used to attend 3 conferences (United States/Germany/Japan)to collect data and attend academic conferences in Asia and Europe to present our findings and give workshops.
