Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2020 most of the research work was conducted online. First, I contacted other researchers interested in Performance in Education (PIE). Then we planned the 2nd Performance in Education: Research & Practice Online Conference/Student Showcase/Film Festival. We hosted the conference with Dr. Rod Ellis of Curtin University, Australia, Dawn Kobayashi of Onomichi City University, and Cyrus Sethna, a filmmaker based in Tokyo, and a variety of presenters from Japan, Taiwan, and Serbia. In addition, there were over 120 student presenters/performers.
We also contacted researchers in PIE who wrote articles for two publications, one on research and one on practice published online and soon to be published as books I edited. Finally, we had a 4-day retreat where a group of researchers discussed PIE.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The research is delayed because of COVID-19. The nature of the research is more suited to face-to-face interaction and it took time to revise the researchers' thinking to do the research and activities online. In addition, the research and activities take more time to conduct online than they do face-to-face. However, the 2020 2nd Performance in Education Conference was successfully executed and plans or the 3rd conference has started smoothly.
In addition, both books on Performance in Education: Research & Practice have proceeded smoothly and the online component is nearly completed with the paper versions in the formatting stage. Presentations and publications have proceeded smoothly and more data has been added to the teacher and student database on Performance in Education.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2021, and possibly in 2022 if the research grant is extended for another year because of COVID-19 delays and cancellations of research, I plan to host another international conference, extend the research database, and publish three books, a proceeding of selected papers from the conference, a book of activities, and a summation of the entire project. All of these projects require large amounts of time and effort that will fill more than one year of effort. At the end of the research project, I plan to have an extensive nationwide database, a collection of books and articles on the topic of Performance in Education, and a series of three international conferences where we can collect more ideas and spread the research and activities that have come from the research.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In 2020 because of COVID-19, travel was prohibitive so I could not use the amount budgeted for the year for traveling to conferences and for traveling to visit schools which use Performance in Education for observation of sample classes and interviewing teachers and students. In 2021, when COVID travel bans are lifted, I hope to conduct observations and interviews, report the results at conferences, and conduct a face-to-face international conference which will cost considerably more than the online conference conducted for academic year 2020. In addition, two paper books will be published of papers of the authors research and practice. A new computer will also be purchased.
