Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Data has been collected throughout Japan, and has been recorded. It is now being statistically analyzed and papers are being written. Paper on recommendations from teacher has been completed. As a result of increased globalization and the demand for higher-level abilities among graduating students, Japanese institutions are gradually modifying their curricula. Writing, which has long fallen behind in terms of staffing, funding, attention is now being treated more seriously, albeit the hurdles remain formidable. Professors must now teach basic processes in writing an academic research paper, ranging from knowing how to access and use the library's resources and digital facilities in order to gather information to forming outlines, topic/supporting sentences, and finally formatting the rhetorical framework properly for an academic research paper, because Japanese high schools continue to offer few real writing experiences, and writing tends to remain at the sentence or paragraph-level. In short, it is important to get a snap shot of the quality of EFL writing instruction within foundation courses, and how teacher educators have adopted various conceptual frameworks for organizing and evaluating their programs. The results might stress the importance of re-thinking and re-organizing current programs or to initiate new writing courses.

Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
It took longer to input and collect data from participants in universities throughout Tokyo and China. Data came from Dr. Huang in Fujian University of Technology in China, Dr. Joel in Kyorin University, Dr. Edo Forsythe in Hirosaki Gakuin University, and Dr. Walker in Musashino University.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Currently the first paper entitled "Characterizing the Complexity, Accuracy and Fluency in Japanese L2 Writing: Preliminary Results" in Prague, Czech, at the 21st ICTEl 2019 conference, a second paper entitled " Online Grammar Checkers Vs. Self-Editing: An Investigation of Error Correction Rates and Writing Quality" has been presented at the XVth International Conference on Business, Economics, Law, Language & Psychology (ICBELLP) in Greece and published in the "Journal of Nusantara Studies." The third paper on the results of the data based on various Kyushu Universities, which will be presented in Zurich, Switzerland, at 5th International conference on Teaching, Learning and Education from July 8 to 10th. A fourth paper will be on all of the data collected for the past three years, which is now being analyzed. Other papers will focus on the most common errors in writing for Japanese EFL learners, and the effectiveness of teacher feedback. These results will be added to my website in May, 2022 [http://genderfluency.com] (based on my second science grant) and will focus on issues related to writing fluency, accuracy and complexity.
