Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research has proceeded largely as planned. In the 2019 academic year I completed the following Stage 1 steps: (a) preliminary literature review, (b) FL learner and teacher focus groups, (c) bilingual questionnaire development & pilot, and (d) questionnaire deployment and data collection. I have also embarked, a little ahead of schedule, on Stage 2 data analysis and begun writing up the results of my questionnaire. Results so far have confirmed that there is a need to develop a global competence framework specific to the Japanese context, and provided some insight into possible answers to my two main research questions. I now have ample data with which to develop the Stage 3 Delphi survey to further explore the challenges and desirable outcomes of global competence in Japan.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
April 2020-March 2021 Stage 2: Complete questionnaire data analysis to obtain extensive but manageable lists of potential answers to the two research questions. These will be used as the foundation for the first Delphi survey round. Publish preliminary findings. Stage 3: Develop a Delphi survey to attempt to find consensus-based answers to the research questions. The Delphi will comprise three rounds and will incorporate a Q-method rating round. Panelists (n=32) will represent four stakeholder/expert groups (FL learners, FL teachers, workers with global experience, researchers).
*COVID19 may impact on my ability to attend conferences to recruit participants and present results. I will publish results in journals and use academic association mailing lists to recruit participants.

Causes of Carryover |
I originally planned international travel to study and receive training in research techniques, but fortuitously an influential researcher in my field (Darla Deardorff) visited Japan and I was able to meet with her locally. I also decided to adopt a data analysis software package that my university already had a license for, and for which training could be undergone online. This year I expect to have substantial preliminary findings to present, so funds carried over will be applied to enable travel to an international conference to present my results.
