Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the first year of this three-year project, the following activities were carried out. Firstly, research into the state of elementary school English education in Japan and abroad was conducted. That is, data bases were searched for any results of research into the Japanese elementary school demographic. Also, articles on successful English programs at elementary schools in countries outside of Japan were sought. This research resulted in a fairly substantial resource that is forming the basis of our literature review. Of note was the inconsequential training of elementary school teachers in how to teach English in Japan. Furthermore, this initial research aided in the completion of a 52-item survey, which will be used to collect data in the 2020 academic year. Lastly, research into how to teach grammar at the elementary-school level led to a presentation at a Trends in Language Teaching conference on January 25, 2020. The presentation and attendance at this conference provided feedback from peers on how to direct elementary school education in the future, which will be incorporated into the research findings report that this project will produce at its conclusion.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This project seems to be progressing as planned, as most of our initial goals for year one have been met. To have had this project progress better than expected would have meant that we were able to begin data collection in year one.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The plans for this year and the next (years two and three) are as follows. We will put our questionnaire online and begin advertising our teacher training workshop that will be held in August. Also, we will solicit help from various school boards in promoting our workshop and recruiting participants for our questionnaire. In addition to contacting school boards, Kyoto City elementary schools will be sent our promotional material with a QR code linked to our online survey. In the final year of the project, data analysis will begin and our findings will be disseminated.

Causes of Carryover |
We had about 170,000 yen left over from our budget last year. We had hoped to use that money for face-to-face meetings in Kyoto, but because of COVID 19, we could not spend the money for travel and accommodations. However, we hope to use the money this year to facilitate travel and accommodations for meetings in Kyoto. The reasons for incurring the amount to be used in this fiscal year is to be able to host a workshop, including paying an honorarium and travel expenses for the invited speakers. Also, internet hosting services are needed for the promotion of the workshop and data collection. In addition, the researchers will need to travel to Kyoto a couple of times this year and various software will need to be acquired.
