Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the second year of this three year project, the following activities related to this research are as follows: (1) an on-demand website was created so that elementary school English teachers can access content related to teaching English at Japanese elementary schools; (2) a finalized version of a "Needs Analysis Survey" was created via a survey application and added to the website so that the research team could collect data on the needs of Japanese elementary school English teachers; (3) two experts in the field of English as a foreign language education were recruited to provide on-demand workshops; (4) the research team filmed, edited, and uploaded the workshops to the website; (5) the website and on-demand workshops were promoted to all of the elementary schools in Kyoto prefecture via a direct mailer that was sent to Kyoto schools at the end of August and the end of March of the 2020 academic year; and (6) meetings were held the elementary school English Education coordinator for the Suita Board of Education and with elementary school principles in Kyoto and Kobe to promote the project and collect survey data.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
This project has made good progress so far. Almost all of the goals for this project to be completed by the end of the second year of the project have been accomplished. However, due to the continuing pandemic, it has been difficult to make face-to-face visits with stakeholders in elementary school English education. Additionally, the pandemic has created greater time burdens of elementary school teachers. As a result, the number of survey responses from practicing Elementary school teachers has been less than was hoped for, making it difficult to begin the data analysis stage of this project.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For this academic year, the third year of the research project, the following future work is planned: (1) to create two more on-demand workshops for the website; (2) to send out more direct mailers to more elementary schools than just the Kyoto prefecture schools; (3) to analyze the survey data; (4) to make conclusions about the needs of Japanese elementary school English teachers and a report on the survey data; (5) to disseminate the data domestically and internationally via conference presentations; and (6) to submit the findings to international and domestic academic journals for publication.
|
Causes of Carryover |
During the next fiscal year, the usage plan is as follows: (1) for costs related to adding more content to the website; (2) to travel to Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo, and Kyoto for data collection; and (3) to travel to America, New Zealand and England to disseminate the research findings.
