Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During this past year of the "Towards the Development of a Critical Learning Support System for Primary School Teachers of English" project, the researchers were involved more data collection and analysis and in data dissemination. That is, more survey data was collect and analyzed, and the research findings were presented at three academic societies and discussed with scholars in-person at those societies to look for potential solutions to the problems uncovered in this research project regarding elementary school English education. The conferences were the 20th AsiaTEFL International Conference 2022, 68th TEFLIN, International Conference 2022, 5th iNELTAL International Conference 2022 at Universitas Negeri Malang, East Java, Indonesia, the 19th Annual CamTESOL Conference on English Language teaching at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, and the 42nd Thailand TESOL International Conference 2023 on “ELT for the Future: Navigating the Possibilities” in Thailand.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
This project has made reasonable progress thus far. In fact, this past year afforded the research team to secure enough survey respondents to be able to make conclusions about the state of English Education at primary schools in Japan. However, due to the pandemic, data collection and analysis was delayed, which resulted in delays in data dissemination.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For the 2023 academic year, an extended year five of the research project, the following activities are planned. First, the research team will write up the findings and submit them in the form of a research paper to one or two academic societies for publication. Additionally, the research has been accepted for presentation at the British Association or Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and the International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (ALAPP), so one member of the team will be presenting the research findings at the above mentioned academic societies.

Causes of Carryover |
In the previous year of this research project, COVID-19 restrictions continued to complicate matters related to fund utilization and travel. As a result, there is a portion of the fund remaining that will be used to cover the costs of traveling to and attending the British Association of Applied Linguistics' 56th Annual Conference being held at York University, England from August 23rd to 25th. Additionally, at the conference, a paper titled, "Compulsory English Education in Japan: A Discussion on the Struggles between Practitioners, Policy and Practice" will be presented.
