Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During 2019-20 we were able to effectively prepare for the implementation of data gathering. WE purchased the necessary statistical software and also computer hardware for processing the data. We developed a questionnaire for use in the main data gathering process, and translated this into Japanese and piloted it with more than 500 students. We began the process of data analysis. We presented the initial findings at a conference and are preparing a paper for publication.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Due to careful planning the research in the first year has progressed smoothly. This has also been aided by the fact that both researchers are in the same university department, allowing for frequent communication. Previous knowledge of the statistical methods has allowed for efficient use of new software.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This year (2020-21) we intend to follow the research plan and to gather the main data for our study. This involves administering the measures of motivation and also measuring proficiency of students, and conducting interviews. We also plan to publish our first paper based on the results of our pilot study conducted in 2019-20.

Causes of Carryover |
We are planning to buy online survey administration facilities and also expect some running costs such as stationery. We are also planning to present some of our initial findings at international conferences.
