Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY2020 I was able to make considerable progress on my KAKEN project. After extracting excerpts and commissioning transcriptions and translations from classroom data from the class of the first teacher participant, I have completed analyses of four excerpts, and am currently working on a fifth. These qualitative analyses code the linguistic and multimodal aspects of the data, as well as a first pass on coding their characteristics in terms of LCT Semantics and Autonomy. I also collected data from a second teacher participant and have isolated excerpts for subsequent transcription, translation, and analysis.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have given two presentations on this project so far and a manuscript presenting the research and its initial findings is under preparation. I have two to four domestic and international presentations planned for AY2021.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Because I was unable to secure graduate student assistance to aid with the coding of the data, I must code it all myself. This will necessarily limit the amount of data I will be able to utilize from this study. Fortunately, I have been able to commission transcriptions and translations of classroom data from a professional service, which partially makes up for this setback. I am planning to continue analyzing some more excerpts from the first teacher participant and will commission transcriptions and translations from the second at the earliest opportunity. Because the nature of the data from the second participant provides a different perspective on the challenges of English education in Japan than that which I had planned for in my initial proposal, I am considering the possibility of a third, comparison sample from a third teacher, but this has not yet been decided. My goal is that, by the start of AY 2022, I will have the bulk of the initial analysis finished and so I will be able to focus more on writing and examining data from a broader analytic and methodological lens.

Causes of Carryover |
Because of the ongoing COVID 19 crisis, travel to international and domestic conferences is likely to remain severely curtailed. I may be able to attend domestic conferences in AY2021, and may use this project budget to that end. As noted previously, I have commissioned transcription and translation of classroom data from a professional service for my first teacher participant's data, and will do so again for the second participant's data. Miscellaneous expenses for computing equipment and the like may also be required.
