Outline of Annual Research Achievements

From April 2021 to March 2022 we have continued to recruit participants for our experiment. We managed to get 87 people to sign up to participate, and 47 have completed the experiment. We also conducted a longitudinal experiment with Japanese university students evaluating English L2 speech samples, along with their own, with an examination of the role of shadowing practice in the improvement of production and awareness of English phonological features. There were four different groups: Control (no interventions), Listening (listening to L1 speech samples), L1 Shadowing (shadowing English L1 speaker samples), and L1 & L2 Shadowing ( shadowing both English L1 and L2 speaker samples). Participants recorded themselves reading a short story at three different time points, the recordings were rated by the students and expert raters, and then compared using ANOVA. We presented the findings at Hiroshima JALT and the JALT2021 International conference and submitted a paper to the post conference publication (this paper has been accepted pending revisions based on comments from the peer-reviewers). We also published additional results in a journal (Bulletin of Osaka Jogakuin University).

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The PI had less time to devote to the project than expected due to personal circumstances (starting a new job, moving to a new city, and taking care of a newborn child). In addition COVID-19 limited opportunities to travel and recruit participants for the study in person.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

This year we hope to complete the data gathering stage of the experiment. We will continue to actively recruit participants to ensure enough responses to provide statistically reliable results. Once data gathering has finished, we will begin the data analysis stage of the study and prepare a report of the findings.

Causes of Carryover

The remaining funds will be used for honorariums for research participants and for travel expenses to present findings at conferences.
