Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined the following issues: (1) the content of the desire of an "individual," (2) the means of fulfillment, (3) the effect of prayer, (4) the perception of the "individual" in prayer, and (5) changes in "individual" faith as a result of the prayer. The study also highlights the issue of extending the concept to the "individuals" of the samurai who constituted the samurai society.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本中世では公武の政権が願望成就の手段として祈りを選択してきた。その一方で、宗教性を内包する権力支配を下支えする「個人」について考察したことが本研究の意義である。人間社会と宗教との関係は現代においても重要で、日本ではそれが見えにくいが、歴史的考察によって浮き彫りとなった宗教性の特質が、現代社会と宗教との関わりをいかに考えるかの補助線になり得るという点が、もう一つの本研究の意義である。
