KeywordsCorrespondence networks / Sinology / Japanese studies / Nineteenth Century
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

I have started to translate in Japanese the letters Leon de Rosy sent to his correspondent at the St-Petersburg Academy of Science, Marie-felicite Brosset. These letters confirmed that the role the Academy of Science played in the correspondence networks of nineteenth century European scholars, not only for collecting information related to Japanese and Chinese studies but also to promote their own research. I have also collected and started to analyze new documents from the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in France related to Stanislas Julien, particularly those related to the printing of Chinese characters.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

I planned several research trips in March to collect primary sources related to this project. However, because of the coronavirus pandemic and travel restriction, I had to cancel them. Therefore I have not been able to visit the following libraries as originally planned: the National Library of St-Petersburg, the Vatican Library, the Archives Lazaristes in Paris, and the UC library in London.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As soon as the entry ban imposed by Japan on Foreigners will be lifted, I will plan new research trips in Europe and Russia to collect primary sources related to this project. I will also publish the Japanese translation of Leon de Rosy letters later this year.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and travel restriction I was not able to organize any research trips abroad (Europe and Russia) in March 2020 to collect documents related to this research. As soon as the travel ban imposed on foreigners is lifted by the Japanese government I will plan again the research trips.
