| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
教皇によって派遣された使節を含め、13世紀に西欧からモンゴル帝国に赴いて宣教活動を行った宣教団について調査を深め、その成果は、"Papal Contact with the Mongols. Means of Communication in the Thirteenth Century"を共著書Communicating Papal Authority in the Middle Agesに寄稿するとともに、西洋史研究会大会シンポジウム「13世紀ユーラシアにおけるキリスト教世界とモンゴル帝国」における「教皇とフレグ・ウルス君主の間にお けるコミュニケーション―翻訳・通訳をめぐる問題」と題する研究報告や、オンラインの国際研究会議Papstzoom: (Miss-)Verstehen - (Fra-)intendimento IIにおける"Efforts at understanding and awareness of misunderstanding: communication between popes and Mongolian monarchs in the Middle Ages"と題する招待講演において発表した。教皇や托鉢修道会とモンゴル君主の間のやりとり、すなわち異文化間コミュニケーションにおいては、他言語間での通訳・翻訳が問題となり、理解と誤解が混合して生じたが、上記の成果においてはその具体的な事例を検討し、教皇による理解のための努力や翻訳の困難さの自覚を史料上確認することができた。また、外交使節として教皇側からは教皇直属の托鉢修道士が派遣された事実を確認するとともに、東西外交・東西交渉研究における言語の問題を研究に位置づけることの重要性を主張した。

Reason
モンゴルでの宣教活動に重点を置くこととなった点は必ずしも当初の予定通りとは言えないが、本研究の進展に即した調査の流れに沿ったものである。研究の成果は口頭での研究報告や論文の形にして複数点挙げることができた。

| Causes of Carryover |
コロナ禍により海外での史料調査及び海外研究者との研究交流が困難であったためその分を次年度に使用する必要が生じた。次年度は海外出張が可能となる見込みであり、この分の額を使用する。
