Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research in FY2021 was unfortunately affected by the COVID-19 pandemics, but I was still able to carry out several research activities as planned. I was not able to conduct my research trips to Europe, and also local movement inside Japan was limited: hence, I had to reschedule part of the dissemination activities for FY2022. Content-wise, the main findings of the research in FY2021 are in line with the results of the first years: the key to a successful ODR mechanism is not centered on its refinement from a methodological point of view, but in its user-friendliness. This is also confirmed by the changes the EU Commission itself made to the ODR portal. In FY2021 I managed to publish the preliminary research results on the International Journal of Procedural Law, possibly the most prestigious law review in the field. I also presented my research in one invited lecture.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Unfortunately, the international situation in FY2021 did not improve as I had wished, and therefore I had to postpone most activities related to public dissemination to FY2022. Because of travel and meeting restrictions, it was also difficult to approach institutional stakeholders, and this will also be done in FY2022. However, the use of technology and the fact that I had already established a solid research network allowed me to carry out the research to a satisfactorily level, and thanks to the generous extension granted to FY2022 I am confident I will be able to complete the research as originally planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Research activities in FY2022 would of course depend on the situation of the COVID-19 pandemics and its effects on international travels. If possible, I would like to carry out the research trips to Europe I had originally planned to complete the qualitative part of the research. Also, I will try to establish a closer relationship with institutional stakeholders (ideally, the Ministry of Justice in Japan and the EU Commission) to maximize the research's impact on society. In this last year of research I will mostly focus on dissemination of the results, holding at least one workshop and hopefully adding one more publication.

Causes of Carryover |
The research was granted an extension to FY2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemics. I intend to use all the remaining funds during such period.
