Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Due to Covid-19, I have been unable to travel to China in 2020-2021 as planned. However, a Chinese assistant helped me collect many relevant materials (museum catalogues, brochures and relevant school textbooks). He also visited many museums in Guangdong and Fujian Provinces to photograph exhibits related to Taiwan and Hong Kong history. I have therefore managed to make substantial, though limited, progress with collection of data for my research. I have also drafted several related research papers, one of which (a study of the changing portrayal of Koxinga in contemporary China, Taiwan and Japan) has already been published. I have also started work on a book proposal.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have been unable to travel to China during 2020-2021 to conduct planned field research, although (as indicated above) I have managed to collect a substantial amount of material relevant to my research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During 2021-2022, I am taking a one-year sabbatical. Due to the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, I am unable to plan fieldwork in China at the present time, and will therefore spend most of my sabbatical in the UK (my home country). While there, I will concentrate on analysing the material I have so far collected during work on this project, and will work on a book proposal together with sample chapters to submit to a major academic publisher. My main aim for the current academic year is therefore now to secure a book contract with an academic publisher, and begin work on drafting a monograph. During 2022-2023, if travel to China is possible, I plan to conduct further fieldwork there in order to gather additional data to help me complete this book.
|
Causes of Carryover |
I have been unable to use any of the allocated funding for travel in the 2020-2021 fiscal year. During the current fiscal year (2021-2022), I am on sabbatical, and the continuing Covid-19 pandemic will make travel to China difficult or impossible. I therefore plan to postpone my planned fieldwork visits until fiscal year 2022-2023, by which time I hope that Covid-19-related travel restrictions will have been relaxed and travel to China will be possible. If fieldwork visits continue to be difficult in 2022, I will use the funding to employ a Chinese research assistant to help me gather additional data (as I did during 2020-2021).
