Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Three main research activities were carried out in 2019. 1) Extensive review of literature on openness, flexibility and creativity in teaching and learning was conducted to develop a draft scale to measure open thinking as a learning outcome. 2) The draft open thinking scale was pilot-tested and reviewed with open education practitioners, researchers and students from different countries (Japan, Korea, USA, Germany , Turkey, China, Canada and more) via individual and group interviews online. 3) Based on the results, the open thinking scale was finalized for the 2020 study.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research is going well as planned. The online open thinking survey was distributed in March 2020 to both undergraduate and graduate students across different countries (including Japan, Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand in Asia; USA in America; Germany, Turkey and UK in Europe; Egypt, S. Africa and Mali in Africa) and will be open until the end of May 2020.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Once the online survey is completed in May 2020, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses will be conducted to refine and finalize the scale between June and October 2020 and a few follow-up interviews will be carried out with a few selected participants if deemed necessary toward the end of 2020.
|
Causes of Carryover |
For interviews during the pilot-testing, the researcher did not have to pay for honorarium and arubaito as a great portion of the work was done online. The incurring amount will be used to pay honorarium for overseas collaborators and assistants for data analyses and follow-up interviews/resource collections.
